Day24

Post by admin »

Neither the beef nor the strawberries and cream seemed happy, either — seemed discontented like.
At six, they came and told him dinner was ready. The announcement aroused no enthusiasm within him, but he felt that there was some of that two-pound-five to be worked off, and he held on to ropes and things and went down. A pleasant odour of onions and hot ham, mingled with fried fish and greens, greeted him at the bottom of the ladder; and then the steward came up with an oily smile, and said: "What can I get you, sir?"

Neither the beef nor the strawberries and cream seemed happy, either (ni la carne de vaca ni las fresas parecían felices = no estaban felices; happy — contento, feliz, alegre; either — cualquiera /de dos/; uno de dos; ambos; también /en oraciones negativas/) — seemed discontented like ( /ellos/ también parecían infelices = no querían quedarse donde fueron /en el estómago/; discontented — descontento, insatisfecho).
At six, they came and told him dinner was ready ( a las seis vinieron y le dijeron que la cena está lista; to come; to tell). The announcement aroused no enthusiasm within him ( El anuncio no le produjo el menor entusiasmo; to arouse — despertarse /ser despertado/, evocar; entusiasmo), but he felt that there was some of that two-pound-five to be worked off ( pero consideró que había una parte de esas dos libras cinco chelines que tuvo que ser trabajado; to feel; to work off — deshacerse de; vender /producto/; pagar con su trabajo /deudas/), and he held on to ropes and things and went down (y él, agarrando las cuerdas y otros objetos, bajó al comedor /bajó/; to hold on to — aferrarse a; rope - cuerda, guindaleza). A pleasant odour of onions and hot ham ( agradable aroma a cebolla y jamón caliente; odour — oler; aroma, fragancia; ham — muslo; jamón), mingled with fried fish and greens (mezclado con /olor/ pescado frito y verduras; green — color verde, pintura verde; verduras /eneldo, perejil, etc./; vegetales verdes), greeted him at the bottom of the ladder ( lo encontré al pie de la escalera; to greet — saludar; encontrarse; alcanzar /sonido/; bottom — parte inferior, inferior, base; ladder — escalera, pasarela); and then the steward came up with an oily smile, and said ( luego el mayordomo se acercó con una sonrisa servil/untuosa y le dijo; to come up — ascender, subir; acercarse; oily — graso, aceitoso; halagador, untuoso):
"What can I get you, sir (Qué puedo ofrecerle, señor; to get — recibir, obtener, conseguir, extraer)?"

the website helps you to get right meaning
Neither the beef nor the strawberries and cream seemed happy, either (ни говядина, ни земляника не казались радостными = были не в восторге; happy — счастливый; довольный, веселый; either — любой /из двух/; один из двух; и тот и другой; тоже /в отрицательных предложениях/) — seemed discontented like (/они/ казались также недовольными = им не хотелось оставаться там, куда они попадали /в желудке/; discontented — недовольный, неудовлетворенный).
At six, they came and told him dinner was ready (в шесть пришли и сказали ему, /что/ обед готов; to come; to tell). The announcement aroused no enthusiasm within him (это сообщение не вызвало никакого восторга у него: «в нем»; to arouse — пробуждать/ся/, вызывать; энтузиазм), but he felt that there was some of that two-pound-five to be worked off (но он посчитал, что там была некоторая часть тех двух фунтов пяти /шиллингов/, /которая должна/ быть отработана = что надо отработать…; to feel; to work off — освободиться от; распродать /товар/; отработать /долг/), and he held on to ropes and things and went down (и он, хватаясь за канаты и другие предметы, спустился /вниз/; to hold on to — держаться за; rope — канат, веревка, трос). A pleasant odour of onions and hot ham (приятный аромат лука и горячего окорока; odour — запах; аромат, благоухание; ham — бедро, ляжка; окорок, ветчина), mingled with fried fish and greens (смешанный с /запахом/ жареной рыбы и овощей; green — зеленый цвет, краска; зелень /укроп, петрушка и т.д./; овощи зеленого цвета), greeted him at the bottom of the ladder (встретил его у подножия трапа; to greet — приветствовать; встречать; доноситься /о звуке/; bottom — нижняя часть, дно, основание; ladder — лестница, трап); and then the steward came up with an oily smile, and said (затем стюард подошел с угодливой/масленой улыбкой сказал; to come up — подниматься, всходить; подходить, приближаться; oily — жирный, масляный; льстивый, елейный):
"What can I get you, sir (что я могу принести вам, сэр; to get — получать, доставать, добывать)?"
